Rhett

"ReVive helped me realize that I am worth it."

Rhett recently told us, “I love life. You can’t experience joy without knowing pain.” And Rhett has known pain. Loss was the one constant in his life. His brother was murdered. His parents abandoned him in a Walmart parking lot after he told them he was gay. His partner of 10 years accidentally overdosed. Substance use became a way of dealing with feelings of “not being worth it.” Somewhere along the way Rhett contracted HIV.  He ended up sleeping on the “L” or in homeless camps. Surviving on the streets became a way of life for Rhett.

Then, Rhett found ReVive. Rhett felt safe at ReVive. For ReVive believes in accepting individuals as they are, treating everyone with dignity and respect, and acknowledging each person’s incomparable worth.

The ReVive team worked with Rhett to build trust and offer a fresh perspective. Safety, trust and participation in ReVive's Engagement Center activities helped Rhett regain hope. Rhett felt “worth it” again. With new hope and with the gentle, caring prodding of the ReVive team, Rhett finally sought medical treatment for his HIV /AIDS. ReVive team members helped Rhett address the side effects of the new medications, helped him obtain food, and helped him develop a sense of purpose.

Today, Rhett's outlook on life is positive. He has housing, a job, and plans to further his computer skills so that he can teach basic computer literacy and resume preparation to other homeless community members. Rhett recently said, "ReVive helped me realize that I am worth it."
